The 47th Annual Woollybear Festival took place in Vermilion on Sunday, October 6, 2019. Despite some rain showers, thousands of people attended the wonderfully wacky festival and parade that has become a destination event drawing around 100,000 people from all around the country.
The Vermilion Fox 8 Woollybear Festival is the largest one day festival in the state of Ohio. The festival and parade was founded by FOX 8 meteorologist Dick Goddard. The festival is held every year around October 1 on a Sunday on which the Cleveland Browns have an away game because Goddard was a statistician for the team.
Festivities included music, the YMCA World’s Greatest Kid’s Footrace, the Caterpillar 500 Race, a Kids & Pets Woollybear Costume Contest, and a spectacular parade featuring marching bands, hundreds of animals, 2,000 marchers and many area personalities.
The annual Woollybear Winter Prediction also took place. According to folklore, the woollybear can predict the winter weather. A wider orange/brown stripe means a mild winter.
The event is sponsored by FOX 8 News and the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce, with numerous non profit organizations benefiting from fundraising efforts during the event. Many FOX 8 News personalities were in attendance, signing autographs and riding in the parade. Dozens of vendors offered a variety of merchandise and food.
